Away Track Meet
The second meet of the season for the lady Sabers got underway Friday afternoon at the American Hebrew Academy’s Track and Field complex. Again, the Sabers started off strong in the field events with Tochi Okoli and Aprille Rolle taking first and second place, respectfully, in the shot put. With a toss of 27 feet 8 inches, rookie thrower Aprille secured a spot to compete at the state meet, improving her previous personal best by a whole foot!
On the track, the Sabers were soaring high as Monica Conley dusted the 100m field with a time of 12.6 seconds, setting an impressive new personal record for herself and also blowing the state qualifying standard away to secure herself a spot on the line at the state meet. Bringing that speed with her to the 4x200 meter relay, Monica and teammates, Tiarra Georges, Kiya Norman and Sydney Whitt earned a second place finish. Speed is not only reserved for the track athletes as the throwing squad, comprised of Miracle Etim-Andy, Tochi Okoli, Aprille Rolle and Brier Evans, brought power and grit to the track with a third place finish in a marvelously executed 4x100 meter relay.
And last, but certainly not least, a big Saber shout out goes to Jenae Edwards who had a grueling finish in her 300m hurdle race. Jenae stumbled to the track right before the finish line but she did not quit and picked herself up in pain and blood to cross the line with a fourth place finish and a new personal best time of 1:04.48.
The lady Sabers showed grace and great effort on the track and in the field. Many of the athletes were competing in events for the first time ever and what they lacked in experience, they overcame with heart and with that, the team finished in second place overall.
