Recap

Salem Academy’s varsity fencing squad rose to the challenge on Saturday, February 11th  and captured 3rd place in this year’s State Championship. Providing the anchor for the squad was team captain was senior Sidnee Everhart who went almost undefeated for the day. Providing additional wins on the march towards 3rd were juniors Katie Alexander and Breanna Sorrells, and sophomore Catherine Davila.

With a bye in the first round due to the team’s 1st place regular season finish in the Mountain Division, the team was well rested and eager to fence Mountain Conference rivals Bishop McGuinness. The team dispatched their foes with all three starters winning bouts and proceeded to face the Coastal Division 1st place finishers, East Chapel Hill H.S. Heading into the semi-finals against the eventual state champions, the Salem fencers fought hard withSidnee Everhart splitting a pair of bouts with one victory and one loss. Breanna Sorrells unfortunately sprung her ankle in a nasty fall while tied 2-2 in her first bout of the day and had to forfeit the bout, which gave East Chapel Hill a win helping them secure a 5-3 victory. Fencing off for 3rd, the team faced another excellent Chapel Hill team, Chapel Hill H.S. The team dug deep into their reserves and fought several hard bouts to prevail and capture 3rd Place. With tired but smiling fencers, Salem Academy has served notice they are a team to be taken seriously.

Congratulations to team for their success. This is a tribute to all of their hard work over the entire season and a direct result of the same. Outstanding performance team!
