Fencing at Millenium Charter Academy
The Salem Academy varsity fencing squad finished the regular season in fine standing. Having chased perennial conference power house Elkin High School all year, Salem finally took the top spot for the last regular meet of the season having bested Bishop McGuinness H.S. 5-0, Morehead H.S. 5-1, and R J Reynolds H.S. 5-3, losing only to Elkin 2-5 who were in turn defeated by 5th place Bishop McGuinness. Congratulations’ Team!
Leading the varsity team as captain was Junior Abbey Linnell with 5 wins and 4 loses for the day. Sophomore Carry Liu, fencing in only her second competition, turned in a 6-2 Win/Lose, and was accompanied by an equally strong performance by Freshman Jillian Adair posting a 6-2 Win/Lose record in what was her first competition. Sadly the J V meet with less of a success for the day.
The J V Team faced strong coed teams from Bishop McGuinness H.S. (2 teams), Elkin H.S. and R J Reynolds H.S. Captaining the JV was an injured Sidnee Everhart (Senior) who in spite of her injuries and an inability to lunge still posted a winning average with 5 Wins and 4 Loses. Sophomore Catherine Davila fenced hard with 3 of her loses going LaBelle (4-4 sudden death) which could have easily gone the other way. Finally, Freshman Julia Zhou gained three wins for the team. Alas, it still wasn’t enough to put the J V in the top three as the only win came against 3rd place R. J. Reynolds 5-2. Still, it was a good learning day for all fencers.
With some injuries to heal, the team looks forward to this weekend off and preparation for the Varsity Team State Championships on February 11th at Orange County H.S. in Durham. The team hopes to see the Sabers fans there rooting on the team.
