Salem Academy Fencers Dominate In Mountain Conference Individual Meet

This year, the North Carolina High School Fencing League changed the format from four team meets to three team meets and a conference individual Meet. Besides determining the seeding for the State Individual Championships, the latter also determined the top fencers for the Mountain Conference. Salem Academy fencers performed exceptionally well, succumbing only to two fencers from Elkin, sweeping the rest of the top 6 and continued the domination to 7th place. Elkin, always a tough opponent, had to dig deep and work for many of their touches as the Saber fencers pressed them hard.

Representing Salem at the Tournament were: Sidnee Everhart (Sr), Abbey Linnell (Jr), Breanna Sorrells (Jr), Catherine Davila (So), Carry Liu (So), Paula Gomez (So), and Julia Zhou (Fr). All girls fenced hard and the results showed it, with the outstanding fencer for the day being newcomer Carry Liu who finished in 5th in her very first fencing event. The order of finish for the day for Salem’s fencers was: Abbey Linnell 3rd, Sidnee Everhart 4th, Carry Liu 5th, Catherine Davila 6th, Breanna Sorrells 7th, Paula Gomez 11th (in spite of withdrawing from the competition due to injury, we hope to have her back by the State Championships) and Julia Zhou12th. Well done team!
