Fencing at Elkin Elementary School
Final Regular Seasonal Meet - After a week of snow, Elkin Public School decided to make up a snow day the following Saturday necessitating the last regular fencing meet being held in the Elkin Grade School Auditorium. To say the venue was small was an understatement, the image of fencing in a phone booth comes to mind. Unfortunately, the official results have yet to be published, so the team finish is not yet available. However, I can report that we were able to field an A team and two B teams with Reynolds adding a guest fencer to both B teams.
In the A matches Mary Allen led the way with a 67% win rate, with Mia Cardi managing a very respectable 50% fencing with an injury that greatly reduces here mobility. We can’t wait until she is fully back to health. Also fencing on the Varsity squad were Breanna Sorrells, Grace Wilson and Katie Alexander, though they didn’t have as strong a showing as on previous meets, all contributed wins in the team competitions.
The B teams saw the top performer for the day, Sidnee Everhart, with a 71% win rate, go Sidnee! Abby Linnell also turned in a strong performance with a 56% win rate while beating one of the toughest fencers in the Bs. She downed one of Elkin’s top fencers 5-2. Others on the B teams were Catherine Davila, Praise Idika, Favor Idika, and Riley Cullen with all but one posting wins on the day.
The A Team (Varsity Squad) now goes into intense workups toward the Team Championships to be held on February 20th, site pending. Individual championships will be the following week on February 28th. We will keep you posted as we learn the site location for both events.
