Last spring I was sent an interesting article from a member of our Board of Trustees.  I thought about it again recently, and decided to pass it along to you.  It was in the Washington Post, and it was written by a 12-year-old girl by the name of Madeline Messer.  She was in 6th grade at the time, and here’s what she had to say:

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. - Winston Churchill

I have a couple of things I want to mention this afternoon, and the first is about the event we had on campus last weekend.  We had a wonderful time at Glimmerglass: The Auction for Salem Academy this past Saturday.

“Bidding at a local auction was proceeding furiously, when the auctioneer received a note from an assistant, ‘A gentleman in this room has lost a wallet containing $10,000. If it is returned, he will pay a reward of $2,000.’ There was a moment’s silence, and then from the back of the room came a cry, ‘Two Thousand Five Hundred!’”

Thanks to the incredible hard work of Camille A‘81 and Andy McDowell (parents of Cate A’14) next Saturday, October 17, we will be having Glimmerglass, The Auction for Salem Academy.

The flag on the front of campus is flying at half-staff today to honor the victims of the 9-11 attacks, which occurred 14 years ago this morning.  As a country and as a school we’re committed to remembering what happened that day.  But why…why remember?  After all, it was an extremely dark day in our nation’s history…right?  It was a day when 19 terrorists hijacked four airplanes…flew two of them into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City…one into the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C…and then crashed the last one into a field in Shanksville, PA.  Nearly 3,000 people wer

Next Friday marks the 14th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.  For those of us old enough to remember that day, the odds are good that we also remember exactly where we were and what we were doing the moment we got the news.  Indeed, I remember hanging up in the middle of a phone conversation and rushing to my kids’ pre-school.  I had to see them…I had to know they were safe.  After that, Susan and I went home and watched the rest of the awful events unfold on our basement television.
