One of the most exciting, and at the same time nerve-wracking moments, at Christmas is when you’re giving a gift to someone you love.  Whether you’ve created the gift with your own hands or traveled from place to place searching, you knew what you were looking for…you just didn’t know what it was.  You were looking for that one thing…the perfect gift.  Not the most expensive thing.  Not the thing that was already on his or her “Santa” list.  I’m talking about the one thing; the one thing that says…I really do know you…and I really do love you.

In her book, Less Time for Meddling, A History of Salem Academy and College 1772-1866, author Frances Griffin writes the following: “Because in the early years of the school the girls were not able to go home at Christmastime, extra effort was exerted to make the occasion both festive and meaningful for them.  One of the most moving of the traditional Moravian services – still observed today – is the Christmas Eve lovefeast, at which, amid music and following the customary serving of coffee and buns, hundreds of lighted beeswax candles are brought in and passed along the pews u

I’m pleased to report that thirteen students from the Academy (including four from this year’s senior class) earned AP Scholar Awards this past year in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams.  The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.

Many of you may be aware of the incident that took place on the campus of Winston-Salem State University this past Sunday. Preliminary reports suggest that there was dispute between two or more individuals on the WSSU campus and two University students were shot.  One of the victims suffered an injury that was not life-threatening, but the other student was tragically killed.  This was an isolated incident and the authorities arrested the sole suspect on Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. - Winston Churchill

I have a couple of things I want to mention this afternoon, and the first is about the event we had on campus last weekend.  We had a wonderful time at Glimmerglass: The Auction for Salem Academy this past Saturday.

“Bidding at a local auction was proceeding furiously, when the auctioneer received a note from an assistant, ‘A gentleman in this room has lost a wallet containing $10,000. If it is returned, he will pay a reward of $2,000.’ There was a moment’s silence, and then from the back of the room came a cry, ‘Two Thousand Five Hundred!’”

Thanks to the incredible hard work of Camille A‘81 and Andy McDowell (parents of Cate A’14) next Saturday, October 17, we will be having Glimmerglass, The Auction for Salem Academy.
