“Ed [Reed] was a difference-maker and a game-changer. And like all great players, he elevated his teammates’ play around him.” (Ozzie Newsome, Former Baltimore Ravens General Manager)
I am a Baltimore Ravens fan, and former player Ed Reed was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. As a player, Reed was smooth on the field but not always smooth behind the microphone, so I was a little nervous when I watched a taping of his acceptance speech. As expected, there were some hiccups, but his closing words really impacted me:
I tell you, each one of you, stay encouraged. Encourage each other. Help somebody. We should. We’re supposed to. That’s what being a human is about, leaving this place better than we got it. That’s all it’s about, y’all.
This is the mantra that I am going to embrace and practice during this school year: Encourage each other. A kind word, a reference to an accomplishment of any size, a smile, remembering a name or a birthday- these are all easy things for us to do, and these actions go a long way. High school is not an easy road, and the time from start to finish is unpredictable. Perseverance is not as regularly recognized and applauded as successes are, but I plan on making a better effort to pay attention to the small wins as much as the major ones.
You all encouraged me last year with both words and actions, so I offer a belated “Thank you” and a request for you to keep doing it. Salem Academy needs our encouragement, and I couldn’t have a better team of students, parents, faculty, alumnae, and friends with whom to partner as we get closer to our 250th year!
Far may our song ring clear!
