From the Head of School

“We're all in this together
Once we know... that we are
We're all stars... and we see that
We're all in this together
And it shows... when we stand
Hand-in-hand... make our dreams come true”
(High School Musical)

I am veering away from my usual Academy focus to go a little bit broader: Salem Academy and College.

I know that we are all used to seeing the names of the two institutions written together, but we have seldom thought of the deep relationship that we have to one another. Many Academy graduates matriculate to Salem College to continue their education; many College graduates teach and work at the Academy. Academy students have been taking College courses for decades, and Academy faculty continue to be adjuncts at the College. I myself enjoy many wonderful relationships with members of the College Administration, and both institutions are under the same roof in all of our Institutional Advancement and Finance offices. Until now, we just haven’t been talking about this very much.

I consider myself fortunate to work under two successful women Presidents: Sandra Doran and I arrived together in the Summer of 2018, and as two “newbies,” we vowed to work together to make a stronger Salem. I have benefitted deeply from her mentorship, and her friendship has been constant. There is no doubt that she will continue to do great things in women's education.

Looking forward: I hope that you all saw the announcement of Dr. Susan Henking’s being named Interim President of Salem Academy and College. Dr. Henking has been one of the Academy’s loudest cheerleaders since her arrival in January 2019 to take on the role of Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs/Dean of the College, and I look forward to working with her and continuing the relationship between the Academy and College that President Doran and I have built.

Salem Academy has a bright future, and recognizing (and embracing) our partnership with Salem College will only lead to greater successes for our girls.

Far may our song ring clear!

Henking Named Interim President and Vinson Interim Vice President
for Academic and Student Affairs

Salem Academy and College announced earlier this week that current Interim Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and Dean of the College Susan Henking, Ph.D. will become Interim President when President Sandra Doran leaves at the end of the 2020 academic year.
Professor of Religion, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Richard Vinson, Ph.D. will assume the role of Interim Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs.

“We had to look no further than Salem’s campus to find a highly qualified Interim President in Susan Henking,” Salem Board of Trustees Chair McDara P. Folan, III said. “Susan cares deeply about Salem’s students and faculty and will be able to transition to Interim President with an uninterrupted flow of outstanding leadership for Salem Academy and College. The Board is equally thrilled that Richard Vinson will step up to fill the role currently held by Susan.”

“I look forward to serving this community—College and Academy—as we move toward our next 250 years,” Henking said. “In my time here, I have learned how special Salem is and how crucial it is to the Winston-Salem of tomorrow. I can imagine no better person to work with going
forward than Richard Vinson.”

The faculty and staff wanted to create something special to let the students know how much they missed them. In assembly on May 11th, they released “The Salem Bunch” video, parodying the Brady Bunch intro song. Many of the faculty and staff contributed with their voices and/or faces on Zoom. Special thanks to the Head of School, Carol Killebrew for being such a good sport!

Senior Celebrations and Information about End of Year Events

May is finally here, and while the pandemic circumstances have changed our ability to gather together, we will continue to celebrate our community and recognize the accomplishments of our seniors.

The Graduation Committee has been hard at work developing meaningful programs for Closing Chapel, Recognition Program, and Graduation which will be held virtually on the following dates:

Closing Chapel: 9:00 am EST, May 22
Baccalaureate: 9:00 am EST, May 29
Recognition Program: 10:00 am EST, May 29
Graduation: 9:00 am EST, May 30

You will receive information on how to access these events online in the coming weeks. It’s important to us that these programs are widely available for family and friends and also protected from general public access.

Each member of the Salem Academy Class of 2020 will have a graduation box mailed to her on the week of May 18. In this box, there will include the following items:

  • Cap and Gown
  • Diploma
  • Programs for Graduation and Baccalaureate
  • Letters from Faculty and Staff
  • Postcard-sized campus print from local artist and creator of Sister Maus, John Hutton
  • Recognition Ceremony Awards and Program
  • Stickers

Due to shipping delays, Baccalaureate Bibles will be available to seniors as they return to campus to collect their belongings. If you would like your Baccalaureate Bible to be mailed to you in early June, please email Dean Rogers by May 30.

Seniors will open their boxes together at 9 a.m. ET on May 29 and post a video of their unboxing experience with their families on their social media platforms with the hashtag #SalemStrong. Unboxing videos may also be sent to Mrs. Emily Ruiz to be shared on our institutional social media accounts.

The date of the December campus celebration will be shared in our Graduation program, and we are working to find a date that accommodates the fall semester schedules for the Class of 2020.

We are excited to celebrate our graduating students and look forward to highlighting their achievements throughout this month! Please check out our social media platforms for a daily highlight from the Class of 2020.

Our campus will begin opening up for students to pick up items and pack up dorm rooms as soon as all students have departed campus for the semester. This is a moving target, and we will keep you apprised of the anticipated opening of campus as soon as we can. Please note that the campus will not open for students until after May 31.

Best wishes,
