Week of April 9, 2020

From the Head of School

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” (Albert Einstein)

I was looking at a Facebook post that one of my Sewanee friend's son posted, and I was awestruck at a list he created titled “Just so I NEVER forget...April 2, 2020” which included:

Gas price a mile from home was $1.59
Parks, trails, entire cities locked up
    Entire sports season cancelled
School cancelled - yes, cancelled (students left March 13 and wouldn’t return)
Don’t socialize with anyone outside your home
No gatherings of 50 or more, then 20 or more, now 10 or more
Tape on floors at grocery stores to help distance shoppers 6 ft       from each other
People wearing gloves and masks outside
Essential workers are terrified to go to work
Medical field workers are afraid to go home to their families

He has about 20 more statements, and at the end, he writes:

“Why, you ask, do I write this status?
One day it will show up on my memory feed, and it will be a yearly reminder that life is precious and not to take the things we dearly love for granted.”

The impact that COVID-19 has made on our lives is unimaginable; our entire way of doing things has been disrupted; and we have been forced to make changes at the drop of a hat. But we are making those changes, and when we don’t do it well the first time, we adjust to doing it better the next time.

Thank you for your patience, your openness, your flexibility, and your support as what was supposed to be a few weeks is now a few months. Our ability to adjust and change is what will allow us to complete this school year with total success.

Far may our song ring clear!

Remote Learning Surveys

Remote learning surveys will be emailed to students and parents on Monday, April 13.  We hope that all students and families will take a few minutes to share their feedback on the first two weeks of remote learning.

AP Exam Updates from the College Board

The College Board released the updated exam schedule for Spring 2020.  The schedule for courses taught at Salem Academy is included below, and AP teachers will review course-specific exam updates in their classes.  We encourage all students to take the exams for which they are registered, but if your daughter has decided not to take a course exam, she should notify Mrs. Caligiuri by May 1.

Additionally, if your daughter has not yet paid for her exams, please mail a check, made out to Salem Academy, to Dean Rogers’ attention. Mrs. Caligiuri is available by email if you have questions.

This is a reminder that Ms. Johnson will be hosting a Pathways Evening Program each Wednesday evening from 7:00-7:45 pm.
