Week of April 2, 2020
From the Head of School
"Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one." (C.S. Lewis)
For more years than I can recall, two friends and I would take a trip to Grayton Beach every Memorial Day Weekend. New jobs, new places to call home, and new additions to families made this annual trip more challenging, and in the last few years, we would all send holiday cards with the promise “next year we must get together.”
There was something in the news last week - I cannot for the life of me even remember what it was - that triggered all three of us to text each other and share our reaction. That text turned into a Face-Time call on Sunday that lasted an hour. We laughed about the crazy things that we were doing under “house arrest,” reminisced about people and places, predicted the future, and enjoyed those moments of silence that we were using just to soak it all in.
As you can guess, we ended our call by chastising ourselves for needing a pandemic to bring us back to something that we value so much - our friendship.
This one-hour conversation was really an eye-opener: I realize how I have neglected to make time to connect with people at a much more intentional level. So starting now, I commit to myself making more phone calls instead of sending texts, and I will return to writing letters more frequently than sending newsy emails.
But at Salem Academy, we still have 2 months of work to do, and accurate communication will be key as we all navigate this virtual reality in which we are living. This newsletter is going to have a different look for the next few weeks: It will continue to be a means of sharing information, but we will have more links and updates than usual. I appreciate the flexibility you all will have in the coming weeks as we slowly adjust to this temporary “new normal” in everything from calendar notifications to closing out this academic year and preparing for the next.
I could not ask for a better community to be with on this journey.
Far may our song ring clear!

Seniors: Finalizing College Decisions
Many of you have been communicating concerns regarding finalizing your college decisions. Please be sure you are checking your email and that your individual school portals for updates regarding any information they are offering in lieu of admitted student days. Dr. Spong can meet with you via Zoom and you can email her with your available times. Some colleges have extended decision day to June 1st but not all of them (though it is likely more will follow). Please be mindful of deadlines for accepting scholarships.
Please update admissions decisions and scholarship information to Dr. Spong by either forwarding emails or sending a screenshot of the information.
Now is a good time to become familiar with all aspects of SCOIR. If you have not completed your Junior Questionnaire please do so by April 7th. Please email Dr. Spong with questions. Thank you!
