Today, with Closing Chapel, we mark the official end of the 2017-2018 school year. Of course, we still have exams and the ceremonial events to complete, but the class work is over for another year. The students are a bit nervous about their exams, although not as much as in December, and they are excited about the special events, and of course, summer! It has been a year full of learning, experiences, opportunities, and life-changing moments.
I am sharing my Closing Chapel remarks with you, the remarks that I gave to the student body this morning.
“In life, almost every goodbye is followed by a hello. You graduate from high school and transition to college. You say goodbye to one set of teachers, and then you are introduced to another group of wonderful educators. You leave behind friends who you see every day but meet new people who you add to your growing company of companions who mean so much to you.
Moving through these changes can be a bit overwhelming and scary, but in every situation in which you find yourself, you learn and grow. My wish for you is that those situations be positive and happy, but we all know that life is sometimes hard and challenging. Whatever the situation, I wish for you the strength to meet the challenges and the wisdom to know how to respond.
Many of us had a wonderful experience with Mary Poppins this year, either as actors, singers, dancers, crews, light booth operators, stage managers, flyers, or audience. Each contributed to the enjoyment of all. There were some lyrics in one of the songs in the show which I think are very appropriate for Closing Chapel. Life is about choices and how we make those decisions which take our lives in a particular direction. Here are some of those lines about choices. It is all up to you and how you decide:
I am coming to the end of my second tenure at Salem, although not quite as long as the first! In reflecting over these years, especially the last couple, I have been so privileged to be able to work with each of you. We have been through some tough times and some extremely happy times. I am so pleased that I was given some extra time with you. My best wishes for the future to all of you and to Salem.”
