Week of April 6, 2018

From Interim Head of School, Miss T

Dear All,

As I told the students at assembly earlier this week, we are poised at the top, now part way down, of the mountain that leads straight to the end of the year. It will be fast, exhilarating, and exciting. There is much important work to be done in the next few weeks but there will also be celebratory and nostalgic events which commemorate a year of hard work and achievement.

The caps and gowns have arrived for the seniors, yesterday the juniors ordered their senior rings, the musical is in the final weeks of rehearsal, and the sports teams are midway through their season. AP exams are on the horizon and seniors are enjoying their senior privileges. The first election for officers for next year was held yesterday. It is an exciting time for the community and I am so pleased with the accomplishments of all of our students as they have worked their way through this school year.

As we approach the end of the year, it is important to remember that there are opportunities to seize, doors to be closed and doors to be opened, and the important work of completion to be accomplished. I have always told the students that it is important to finish as strong, if not stronger, as we began. We are now in “finishing mode” and my hope for us all is that we take those opportunities offered, complete the work for this year, and in the words of Coach Howard, “Finish Strong!”

I hope that I will see many of you in the next few weeks. Happy Spring to all of you!

Take care,

Mary Lorick Thompson

Interim Head of School

Salem Days Scheduled for April 19 & 20

Our final two Salem Days of the year will be held April 19 and 20. Please share your love of Salem Academy by encouraging friends and family to attend.

Boarding students will arrive at 5:00 pm on Thursday to move into the dorm for the evening. On Friday, they will join day students and their families to learn about life as a Salem Academy student. This is a great opportunity to see the school, with a campus tour, class visit, and an opportunity to meet our students, faculty, and administrators.

Families can register online or call the admissions office at 336-721-2643 for details.

If you know a student who belongs at Salem, please let her know about this event.

Athletics Update

Varsity Soccer
The Sabers soccer team returned from spring break ready to roll as they hosted Westchester Country Day School on Tuesday. The team played great and seem to be getting comfortable playing together. Kelly Nesser and Mandy Peake held the defense together with solid play. Westchester got on the scoreboard in the first half and despite many attempts on goal and hard work, Salem was unable to even the score. Lea Allescher and Ruta Apanavicius both put in solid minutes for the offense and make great plays that resulted in shots on goal.
Varsity Track and Field
The Sabers competed well on March 22nd at their last meet before Spring Break. The team finished second overall in the meet with a total of 88 points. The team had several first place finishers, with Monica Conley winning the 100 meters and earning a state qualifying spot, Alia Agee won the 400 meters, Praise Idika and Favor Idika finished first and second in the high jump and triple jump, and Salem swept first through fourth place place in the discus, with Tochi Okoli winning and also earning a state qualifying spot, and Lucy Calaway, Makenna Hartwich, and Aaliyah Brown placing second, third, and fourth. Other top three finishers were Jasmine Robinson in the 300 meter hurdles (3rd), and Aaliyah Brown (2nd) and Staci Davis (3rd) in the long jump.
