Dr. JaNae Joyner Named Chief of Staff
JaNae Joyner, Ph.D., MHA has joined Salem Academy and College as Chief of Staff effective May 15. A widely respected and visionary leader in education, she previously was Associate Vice President and Assistant Dean of Curriculum Experience and Support Services at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
At Wake Forest, Joyner previously served as the Director of Health Care Education and Innovation and as the Executive Director of the Center for Experiential and Applied Learning, an institutional training center for students, residents, faculty, nurses, allied health, community schools and K-12 education. In addition, in her former role, she had responsibility for the Wake Forest University School of Medicine’s Center for Excellence for Research Teaching and Learning and its Coy Carpenter Library.
At Salem, Joyner will take the lead on developing new programs focused on health leadership and be the institutional leader focused on partnership development for Salem Academy and College. Joyner will also support the implementation of the RISE Strategic Plan, the institution’s 3-year strategic plan.

She has impressed us with her ability to develop relationships and new initiatives to create opportunities for students throughout her career. We are excited that she will bring years of experience in health-related programming as well as a commitment to the liberal arts to Salem as we transform,” said President Summer McGee.

“For the past 15 years, I have dedicated my time and energy to setting a new standard for excellence and best practices in higher education and healthcare,” she said. “In each role I have held, I have championed academic innovation, diversity and inclusion, and leadership.”
Highlights of Joyner’s career accomplishments include:
- Collaborated with c-suite leaders to create strategy across the Wake Forest University School of Medicine curriculum experience and support services areas.
- Founded the Center for Experiential and Applied Learning—a simulation center serving both the academic and clinical enterprise.
- Built first-rate, successful academic learning networks and curriculums to support the MD program and experiential learning across lifelong learner types from pre-licensure to continued competency.
Joyner received her Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine in 2007 from Wake Forest University, where her doctoral and post-doctoral research focused on translational basic science, community programming and continuing medical education for primary care physicians related to hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes. She received a master’s in healthcare administration degree in 2014 from Winston-Salem State University and has two postgraduate certificates from the Kenan Flagler School of Business at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in Management and Business Acumen. Joyner received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from the University of Mount Olive.
She has received numerous early career investigator awards, has published more than 10 manuscripts and 50 abstracts at regional, national and international meetings, and attended epidemiology and leadership programs at Johns Hopkins and Harvard Business School. In addition, Joyner received a certificate in Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion from Atrium Health and a certificate in Career Development for Women Leaders, also from Atrium Health.
