Carol Killebrew, a longtime advocate for girls’ education and a current principal at an all-girls preparatory school in suburban New York City, has been named the new head of school at Salem Academy effective July 1, 2018.
“I am humbled and honored to be named the next Salem Academy Head of School,” Ms. Killebrew said. “Since I first learned about Salem, I have been impressed with the school’s history and its very evident commitment to girls’ education. It was when I visited the campus and spent time with the students, the faculty, and the parents that I witnessed an even deeper dedication to this institution. I truly believe that Salem Academy is the beginning of possible, and I look forward to joining the community this summer.”
A graduate of an all-girls preparatory school in Tennessee, Ms. Killebrew will replace Interim Head of School and longtime Dean of Students Mary Lorick Thompson who will be retiring after 45 years of service at the Academy.
“Carol Killebrew rose to the top of a national pool of candidates,” Salem Academy and College President D. E. Lorraine Sterritt said. “She has a wealth of experience in the field of prep school education, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Salem community.”
In her current role as principal of the Ursuline School in New Rochelle, NY, Ms. Killebrew is responsible for the daily running of the school of 800 girls, grades 6 through 12. She has been an active leader in the development of an international program, and she redirected the school’s curriculum mapping initiative, which resulted in collaboration among department chairs, curriculum coordinators, and learning specialists. She has actively worked with parent and alumnae groups through crowdfunding and other fundraising initiatives.
Prior to being named principal in 2014, she worked at her alma mater, Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, Tenn. where she taught both Latin and English from 1986 to 2007 and then served as director of planned giving from 2007 to 2010. After 2010, she returned to the classroom until her move to New York.
