Catherine Ward was named the 2014 Elisabeth Oesterlein Award recipient at Salem Academy and College’s Founders Day Convocation on April 25.
The Salem Academy Oesterlein Award is named in honor of Salem’s first teacher. Candidates are nominated from the graduating class by members of the Salem community—faculty, staff, and fellow students—and each nominee competes against other truly outstanding seniors. Among the criteria are: attend Salem all four years of high school; make a notable contribution to the quality of life at Salem and exemplify quality leadership; and be conscientious and diligent in the pursuit of academic excellence, attaining at least a 3.0 average overall.
Ward is the epitome of a Salem Academy distinguished student. She is the recipient of the prestigious Sisters Merit Scholarship, which provides full tuition, room and board for four years. She is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, and the International Thespian Society. She is a two-time Citizenship Honor Award-winner and served as Commencement Marshal for three years before being named first honor graduate for this year’s ceremony.
Ward has engaged in numerous student clubs and organizations during her time at Salem, including Key Club, where she was the President last school year, Honor Guides, Orientation Committee, Ecology Club, and Young Democrats. She currently serves as President of the Student Council. She co-developed the Salem Academy Model United Nations team and is a four-time Best Delegation Award Winner. She has contributed to the Grassroots school newspaper, served as Literary Editor for the Academeliterary magazine, and is currently finishing her year as one of the editors for the Quill Pen yearbook.
She will attend Duke University in the fall as a Benjamin N. Duke Scholar. This scholarship provides more than $250,000 over the next four years for tuition, room and board, and summer study.
