Director of College Counseling


Educating girls since 1772, Salem Academy fosters compassionate and creative leaders, prepared for college and life, who chart their paths with character, curiosity, and courage. Salem Academy seeks a Director of College Counseling to join our office starting in August 2019.

This position is a full-time 10 month per year position.

Job Description

The Director of College Counseling will implement and direct a four-year college counseling program.  The Director of College Counseling reports to the Head of School.

College Counseling Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a four-year college counseling program
  • Create and maintain relationships with students and parents
  • Advise students in the course selection process and help students create a four-year academic plan
  • Meet individually with first and second year Academy students a minimum of one time per year
  • Meet individually with third year Academy students a minimum of one time per semester; meet with the family (either in person or via online video-conferencing) in the second semester; help students in selecting college lists that meet their college goals
  • Meet with fourth year Academy students individually a minimum of 2 times during the first quarter to solidify college application process; continue regular meetings until all applications are complete
  • Offer a college application workshop during Orientation
  • Develop programs for students and parents during Parents’ Weekend around relevant college counseling topics
  • Teach a monthly class to first and second year academy students on topics assisting their high school development such as personality, time management, resume building as well as college and career topics
  • Teach classes to third year Academy students during the second semester on the college search and application process
  • Teach classes to fourth year Academy students during the first semester around college application and college life topics (in conjunction with the school counselor)
  • Establish and maintain relationships with college admission officers
  • Represent Salem Academy
    • At regional and national conferences such as SACAC, NACAC, NCAIS, and College Board
    • By participating in counselor fly-in and college campus tours
    • By hosting college admissions representatives on campus
  • Serve as Senior Class Advisor

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Attends weekly administrative meetings
  • Attends monthly department chair meetings
  • Assists in overall Academy course development to keep in line with current educational trends
  • Assists with Academy admissions events for prospective students, attending events such as Open House and Admitted Students Nights
  • Creates and updates a school profile
  • Works with the school counselor to create an integrated counseling program
  • Facilitates workshops for teachers and advisors regarding teacher recommendations and student course selection
  • Coordinates with the athletics department to guide students in the recruitment process
  • Maintains college application platform (Naviance, Scoir)
  • Prepares reports for the administrative team and Board of Directors, as requested
  • Establishes and maintains college counseling budget
  • Stays current in college admissions and educational trends and updates the college counseling program accordingly

Required Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Master’s Degree in education and/or counseling
  • Prior college counseling experience at either the college or independent secondary school level; proven knowledge of admissions practices  
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other Academy administration, faculty & staff
  • Proficient technology skills with Word, Excel, social media and college platforms such as Naviance
  • Must be able to walk upstairs and on hilly terrain on campus
  • Must be able to lift 35 lbs
  • Must be able to travel out of state for conferences & college visits

Preferred Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Prior experience as a Director of College Counseling in an independent school
  • Demonstrated counseling skills beyond college admissions
  • Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Experience at the high school and college level
