Associate Dean of Students

Salem Academy and College, the oldest continuously operating educational institution for girls and women in the country by its founding date of 1772, invites applications for Associate Dean of Students. 

Under the direction of the Dean of the Students, the Associate Dean of Students is responsible for providing overall leadership and oversight of the programs that support Salem College students and enhance their educational experience. Responsibilities include overseeing and administering all aspects of student affairs-related compliance and the student conduct system (College), including final decision making as appropriate, and providing a philosophical, developmental, and educational context for student community standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Dean with providing leadership in developing annual and long-range goals and objectives for Student Affairs.
  • Provides leadership and training to all bodies that have a responsibility in resolving student conduct cases. 
  • Provides support and guidance to the campus community on issues of student conduct; serves as the primary decision maker on conduct case outcomes as appropriate and/or in coordination with grievance response team members. 
  • Serves as a member of the Dean of Students Leadership Team, assisting in strategic planning for the department; participates in decision-making that affects the programs under their direct supervision as well as the DOS department.  
  • Serves on various department, division, and Salem committees; works with campus partners including students, faculty, staff, alumnae and community members to create and implement national models of excellence for all the programs under their supervision. 
  • Meets with students to provide support, advice and referrals.
  • Develops and reviews policies directly related to students. Ensures smooth implementation of policies and procedures of student grievance and disciplinary procedures.
  • Manages Student Affairs staff recruitment, onboarding, training, staff development, performance review and evaluation.
  • Ensures students and others who are accused of violating the Student Conduct Code are given a fair and expedient process; ensures that the focus of the process remains educational for the respondent as appropriate and that the outcomes remain balanced between the needs of an individual and those who were affected by the behavior at issue. 
  • Monitors and proposes revisions to institutional policy related to student conduct based on regulatory changes.
  • Ensures the institution has adequate grievance procedures for resolving complaints, including notification, investigation, and disposition of complaints.
  • Conducts, oversees and/or coordinates investigations.
  • Proposes and oversees assessment and quality improvement activities for student affairs including but not limited to student complaints, conduct, etc. 
  • Maintains records and dates of training, complaints, investigations, and findings relating to compliance and student conduct in accordance with confidentiality requirements.
  • Provides educational materials, programming, and training for the campus community.
  • Obtains training on changing regulations and guidance for Title IX, as well as local/state/federal sex discrimination regulations.
  • Assists the Dean of Students in their functions and acts in their absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's or doctorate degree in higher education, college student personnel, educational leadership, counseling, or related field 
  • Four years full time experience, including three years with higher education compliance and familiarity with student conduct processes
  • Experience with Title IX related processes
  • Supervision of staff, graduate and/or professional

  • Proven ability in assisting students in unbiased reflection on behavior, ethical decision-making, values, and community membership
  • Exceptional ability to manage confidential and sensitive information
  • Competency in working under federal, state, and local legislative and legal mandates such as Title IX
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain accurate student conduct records using a student conduct database
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, administrators, and other members of the community
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations
  • Commitment to ongoing engagement to understand best practice in student conduct administration in higher education
  • Demonstrated understanding of residential life, community programming, leadership development, conflict resolution and legal and regulatory issues in higher education
  • Ongoing commitment to personal education on legislative and legal issues affecting student conduct
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to fostering an environment of intentional inclusion for all diverse identities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with alternative dispute resolution methods including but not limited to restorative justice, mediation, or conflict coaching
  • Experience adjudicating student organization conduct cases
  • Prior management of academic integrity cases
  • Familiar with referral processes and typical university campus resources
  • Experience providing consultation to university faculty, staff and administration
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practice in student conduct process and/or administration in a higher education setting
