From the Head of School

This week's message comes from the Closing Chapel speech:

Welcome to closing chapel. It’s hard to believe that his will be the very last time that all of us will be gathered together in this room…ever. In many ways, I know that’s an exciting thought because it means we’re closing in on graduation, summer vacation, new adventures in college! But it brings a little sting with it – a feeling of sadness. I had a friend once refer to this mixed emotion as being Happy-Sad. Well, I’m feeling kind of Happy-Sad right now.

So, when I was trying to think about what I wanted to talk about today, I asked a couple of students what they thought everybody would like to hear me say. Now, these two particular students happen to live in the same house with me, and they both said…independently of one another…“Dad…just say “goodbye”! Well, I will say goodbye, but first I just want to say a few words; to give you something to think about in the days ahead. I want to talk about perseverance, and I’ll start with story most of us have heard before. It’s a story about three women, and it’s found in the gospel of Mark, chapters 15 and 16. Click here to read the full message.

Blessings,

Karl

Art Student News

An update from Mrs. Hiatt: It is that time of year again when the art students are preparing for our big show the last night of school, Friday, May 25. Everyone is invited to the reception in the Elberson Fine Arts Center, followed by the Spring Choral Concert. We are looking forward to showing off the results of all our hard work this year, as well as displaying a retrospective of senior work.

Note to parents of all art students: Participation in hanging the show, hosting the reception, attending the Spring Choral Concert and taking down the show are the student’s exam, and all students are required to fully participate in every aspect of this big task.
Hanging the show starts 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 20 (and is over a little before 3:00 p.m.). Since we will be putting up roughly 125 pieces of art, we would be deeply appreciative of any parents who would be willing to help us! Contact Leslie Hiatt (leslie.hiatt@salem.edu) to volunteer.

On Friday, May 25, art students’ responsibilities begin as soon as Recognition is over, when they will eat together at the Elberson Fine Arts Center and prepare for the reception. Since it is a requirement for students to eat together, dinner is provided at no cost to the students. If seniors wish, they may eat with their families at the Senior Dinner in Bryant Hall, but they must be back in the Elberson Fine Arts Center no later than 6:45 p.m. Parents of underclassmen who wish to eat with us, must contact Ms. Hiatt (leslie.hiatt@salem.edu) prior to Friday May 25 to sign up for the dinner (pizza and a salad, followed by delicious brownies made with love by Mrs. Shelia Livengood). The cost is $5 a person for parents and family members.

The art student’s exam responsibilities will be over about 9:30 p.m. after they have taken down the art show and attended the Spring Concert.

We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Mrs. Hiatt

Final Weeks Schedule

It's hard to believe, but the 2011-2012 school year is almost over! Click here for the detailed schedule for the final two weeks of activities and events.

Furry Friends Visit

Academy students got a little pre-exam stress relief this week in the form of a visit from puppies and dogs from the Forsyth Humane Society. Coordinated by Ms. Alicia Markham, the Humane Society brought a truck to campus on Wednesday so that students could enjoy a little down time with the pups on the front lawn.

Making News at Salem

This week, Salem Academy honored those who work on our school publications--Grassroots, the school newspaper; Academe, the school literary magazine and Quill Pen, the yearbook--at the annual Publications Banquet, held in Bryant Hall. This year's yearbook was dedicated to Anna Kellner, and featured a special recognition of Ms. Barbara, everyone's favorite cookie lady!

Parents' Excellence Fund Update

Dear Salem Academy Parents,

It is difficult to believe that exams are here and graduation is just around the corner! Congratulations to all the seniors for their perseverance and tenacity. To the parents of those seniors…WOW! It takes one’s breath. The gift you have shared with your girls in the form of an Academy education has prepared them well for their next academic adventure. That is something everyone can be proud of.

The close of the academic year is quickly followed by the close of the fiscal year for the Academy. If you have not made your contribution yet, please send in your checks or ask your daughter to drop off her change in the development office at the academy. We are Very serious that we are looking for participation at ANY level from our current parents. As we continue to say, “a quarter to a quarter of a million” will help to keep future costs down by allowing Salem to apply for grants which they would not otherwise be able to do. Participation among current parents at the Academy is currently at 26%. Last year the participation level finished at 27%. I know we can do better than last year!

You may mail your gift to Salem Academy, 500 East Salem Avenue, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27101. Please note “Parents Excellence Fund” on the check. Click here to make a credit card gift online at or call the development office at 336-721-2607.

We are also happy and proud to announce that the Senior Class had 100% giving participation at their senior lunch last week! Let’s try to match that with 100% participation among the parents!

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Andy and Camille McDowell
